You’ll be greeted by richly colored drapery, individually selected wallpaper, and original art. Baths showcase sparkling white tile, imported chrome fixtures, pedestal sinks, and rainfall showers. Beds and seating (every room has club chair or sofa) are as comfortable as they are beautiful. Each has been thoughtfully appointed with an eclectic, yet elegant, mix of contemporary and period pieces. Attention to modern needs has been paid, too, with desks, iPod docks, wiFi and 42-inch flatscreen tv’s. Some of the rooms feature water views; all have pleasant outlooks on the distinctive Shippan Point neighborhood, a leafy sanctuary of wide, quiet streets and homes of character.
Rooms are named for original Shippan Point families, some of whom played roles in the hotel’s history. Of the five second floor rooms, sunny #1, Belding, faces the front, with a queen bed, and still has an original beveled glass window in the bath. #2, Ennis, has a side view, with glimpses of Long Island Sound in winter, a spacious bath and king size bed. #3, Rogers, faces the Sound, includes a generous seating area with sofa, a king bed, and a Tiffany glass window in the bathroom. #4, Gillespie, in a rich plum color scheme, includes a south-facing Victorian bay window, king bed, and light, bright bath. #5, Gurley, in rich William Morris-inspired green, faces front across the hall from #1, with a queen bed and an antique glass window in the bath.
On the top floor of the hotel, the inventive restoration has taken full advantage of the building’s peaked gables and dormers to create distinctive, soaring ceilings and interesting nooks. Spacious #6, Scofield, is a side-facing suite offering an expansive seating area with 2 sofas, skylights and dormer nooks, with a king bed. #7, Lottimer, offers the hotel’s best water views, as well as some of the home’s original stained glass, and a king bed. #8, Ullman, offers side facing views, with a king bed, a cathedral ceiling and skylights. #9, Devitt, faces front, with a cathedral ceiling, alcoves, large bath, queen bed, and an enviable antique desk.
